If hairstylists had a nickel for every time someone said, "Just a trim," we'd probably have enough to buy everyone in the salon a coffee. It's one of the most common phrases we hear, and one of the funniest conversations we have every single day.
The funny thing is that "just a trim" doesn't always mean the same thing to everyone. For one guest, it means taking off a quarter of an inch. For another, it means removing everything that's dry, split, or damaged, which can sometimes be much more than expected.
Your stylist isn't trying to talk you into cutting more hair. In fact, most of us know how personal your hair is, and we want you to feel comfortable every step of the way.
What we're really doing is translating what we see into what will keep your hair looking and feeling its best. Split ends don't stop exactly where we'd like them to, and healthy hair often starts just a little higher than we'd hoped.
That's why you'll sometimes see your stylist gently show you where the damage begins or explain why taking just a little more today can help prevent even more breakage later.
The best consultations happen before the scissors ever touch your hair. We love when clients tell us exactly how much they're comfortable removing, what they're hoping to achieve, and whether they're growing their hair out or simply maintaining its shape.
Communication is one of the most important tools in our salon, right alongside our shears.
So the next time you say, "Just a trim," don't be surprised if your stylist smiles, asks a couple of questions, and holds up a tiny section of hair. We're not negotiating... we're making sure we're both imagining the exact same trim.
Because the happiest appointments aren't the ones where we guessed correctly. They're the ones where you leave saying,
"That's exactly what I wanted."
