The Great Schedule Juggle

Stylist Confessions: The Great Schedule Juggle

Every stylist has a mental math problem running in the background all day: this color, this cut, this blow-dry, times however many minutes are left before the next name shows up on the book. Most days the math works out fine. Then hair happens.

Sometimes a color just won't lift the way the swatch promised. Stubborn pigment, resistant grays, hair that's seen one too many box dyes before it found its way to the chair — none of that is something a stylist can see coming, and none of it is something more processing time can safely rush past. The choice is always the same: wait it out and get it right, or hurry it and get it wrong. We're always going to choose right.

Then there's the other side of the schedule: the appointment booked for 60 minutes that shows up 20 minutes in, still expecting the full 60 minutes of service. We get it — traffic happens, kids happen, life happens. But that missing 20 minutes doesn't just disappear. It gets borrowed from whoever has the next appointment, and then the one after that, until an entire afternoon is quietly running behind because of one red light that took too long.

It's a bit like trying to keep a group text on schedule when one person takes forty-five minutes to respond — except the group text doesn't have foils in it.

So if your appointment ever runs a little long, or your stylist looks like she's playing calendar Tetris between clients, that's exactly what's happening. She's not disorganized — she's protecting your hair and everyone else's afternoon at the same time. A little grace (and a heads-up text if you're running behind) goes a long way.
